The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health ‘Basic Health & Safety Certificate’ has been designed as a first level course incorporating fundamental occupational health and safety knowledge for all employees that will enable them to contribute to any health and safety management system.
The programme covers a defined syllabus and is assessed by a short objective test consisting of 30 multi-choice questions.

- Prevention of accidents and ill health - Risk assessment
- First aid at work - Personal protective equipment
- Workplace health, safety and welfare - Work equipment
- Electricity - Fire prevention
- Occupational health - Hazardous substances
- Ergonomics and workstation design - Manual handling
- Noise
Employees with little or no prior knowledge of current health & safety legislation who require a nationally recognised certificate.
Aims:
- To provide attendees with information on health and safety issues, which they will encounter during their working day.
- To promote a positive health & safety culture;
- To increase awareness of health & safety issues;
- To carryout assigned tasks in both a safe and efficient manner;
- To understand the legal responsibilities of both the employer and employee as defined by the Health & Safety at Work Act.
