Scissor Lift Training Course
Boss Training offer Scissor Lift Training Courses across the UK, usually available at short notice.
A scissor lift is an aerial work platform (AWP) that typically will only operate vertically by applying pressure to folding criss-cross supports beneath the platform.
When the supports are elongated in a pantographic pattern, upward movement is achieved. The working platform can also extend horizontally to provide easier access to the job should there be obstacles below.
The compression of the scissor action causes the scissor lift to descend and return to ground level. There are a number of different types of scissor lift:
Unpowered – PAV’s or push around verticals are small, manually operated lifts, easily transported and used generally on straightforward, temporary works. They have no motor and need external force to propel them. See our IPAF PAV training page for more information.
Self-Propelled – These units can be driven by the operator, sometimes while the work is in progress. They are wheeled or tracked and are one of the most common ways to access overhead work on construction sites. Can be used externally or internally in varying sizes. A competent operator should be capable of driving a small battery powered lift as well as a larger diesel powered machine.
Vehicle-mounted – Some equipment is mounted on the back of a van or truck and is therefore to all intents and purposes a static machine. Stability is usually achieved by the use of stabilisers or outriggers. Smaller machines can be towed behind a vehicle.
Whether hydraulic, pneumatic or manual, the design and operation are fundamentally the same to enable an operative to safely use a wide variety of machines if considered competent to do so.
Knowledge of the controls along with a theoretical and practical awareness of hazard prevention by way of risk assessment is a basic requirement. A scissor lift training course will provide these and other operational skills which can be carried forward to underpin any experience already gained whilst working on-site. IPAF Scissor lift and boom training courses are available throughout the country and can be conveniently booked over the phone, sometimes with as little as one-day’s notice. However, caution must be exercised when using any work at height equipment.
IPAF (international powered access federation) accredit the scissor lift course and issue a PAL (powered access license) card which is proof of competence and lasts for 5 years.
Being in possession of an IPAF scissor lift license proves to employers that you have been trained to a high standard and are considered competent to operate vertical powered access machines safely. There is increasing scrutiny particularly on construction sites of operator’s qualifications. The HSE (health and safety executive) employ inspectors who will often visit a site unannounced to audit the safety record and will often need to see proof of training for anyone involved in working at height.
Each year there are in the region of 80,000 delegates trained by IPAF in the UK. Many of these successful delegates have little or no previous experience but having an IPAF card enhances their career prospects both at home and abroad. There is much anecdotal evidence to suggest that a scissor lift licence can significantly increase your chances of securing well paid employment.
