Face Fit Testing
The Health and Safety Executive approved code of practice stipulates that anyone using respiratory protective equipment (RPE) should be trained on how to use it properly to protect themselves. Face fit testing gives candidates the skills to be able to properly check, fit and wear a face mask so that it offers maximum protection from dust, airborne toxins and other dangerous substances.
Pre-Test Checks for Face Fit Training
Facial hair can reduce the efficiency of a face mask because it is more difficult to achieve an effective seal. It is therefore recommended that candidates are clean shaven. We also request that candidates do not smoke or drink coffee for at least 30 minutes prior to the test. Re-testing is recommended every few years, or if a person’s face shape changes. They may put on or lose a significant amount of weight, or have a disfigurement due to an accident; broken nose etc.
When face fit testing has been completed it may become apparent that further training is required. The dangers of asbestos have been well documented and you can read more about our asbestos awareness course here. However, training to prevent other hazards may not present themselves as being so obvious. For example, dust awareness training. This has been in the news recently as the HSE are concerned about the long term health effects of inhaling dust.
