IPAF Training Courses

Boss Training is at the forefront of powered access platform training in the UK. Being IPAF accredited, we can deliver four distinct IPAF approved training courses for the operation of cherry pickers, scissor lifts, van mounts and harnesses. Please click on the course headings for more information about IPAF Training:

Why do I need scissor lift or cherry picker training?

One of the most common cause of major injury in the workplace is falling from equipment or surfaces when working at height. As many as one in five UK construction sites fail in some way when it comes to Health & Safety inspections, especially when dealing with working at height safety practices. The cost of accidents and incidents is continually increasing, with your company’s reputation and financial health at stake if such accidents result in delays in contracts, repairs or legal fees, compensation pay outs, and higher insurance.

IPAF training courses ensure that contractors and employees are appropriately trained to work with and operate scissor lifts, cherry pickers, van mounts, safety harnesses and push around verticals, minimising the risk of accidents and injury as well as generating more safety for the company and the employees using access platforms.

How do I obtain a cherry picker licence?

You must complete an IPAF course. Courses can be made up of a mixture of theory and practical elements, with a written test component ensuring a level of competence that satisfies IPAF standards are met. On successful completion of IPAF training, attendees will receive a PAL (Powered Access Licence) card, along with a certificate, safety guide and log book. The PAL card or IPAF card is especially useful as it features a photograph of the card holder and can be verified by calling IPAF.

What is IPAF?

The International Powered Access Federation, IPAF is responsible for promoting safe and effective implementation of powered access platforms across the globe. Since 1983 IPAF has remained a not-for-profit members’ organisation that is dedicated to representing the respective interests of all involved in powered access, from distributors, manufactures and users to hire and training companies. IPAF has been instrumental in promoting the design, safety and testing procedures that are now taken as standard in industrial practice.

What is an IPAF Card or IPAF Licence?

At the end of your IPAF training you will receive an IPAF licence card and IPAF certificate. Not dissimilar to a driving licence, your IPAF card proves that you have been trained to operate a certain type of powered access equipment. It gives both the employee and the employer the security of knowing they are qualified to work with certain types of access platforms.

What IPAF Licence do I need?

The nature of the IPAF training course programme for access platform operators is the result of extensive research on behalf of leading industry figures. It is certified by TÜV, which means it has been shown to conform to the international standard (ISO 18878), referring to mobile elevating work platforms and operator training.

There are several components to this IPAF training course, which are:

  • 3a (Mobile Vertical) – Scissor Lift Training for users of mobile scissor lift type MEWPs
  • 3b (Mobile Boom) – Cherry Picker Licence for operators of mobile booms or cherry pickers
  • 1b (Static Boom/Van Mount) – For operators of static boom/van mount MEWPs (Can be completed as a stand-alone session or combined with 3a and 3b courses)

Course duration: full working day

The MEWPS (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) for Managers training course is essentially for individuals who manage people who work at height and are therefore responsible for the health and safety of those on site. It is a theoretical classroom-based course.

Course duration: full working day

If a worker is operating from a 3b or 1b boom-type MEWP, such as a cherry picker or van mount, the recommended safety practice is to provide adequate restraint via a full body harness that possesses an adjustable lanyard. This IPAF safety harness course is a must for all those who need to use safety harnesses and lanyards to work on cherry pickers and boom lifts. It contains a mix of theory and practical training, from selection and inspection, to wearing, using, and maintaining safety harnesses.

Course duration: half a working day

A dedicated IPAF accredited training course for those involved in using PAV’s. The course covers the use of category 1a PAV machines and includes pre-use inspections, hazards and risks, safe operating procedures and handovers. This training course can also be incorporated into the 3a scissor lift operator training by way of familiarisation.

Course duration: half a working day

Do I need to renew my IPAF licence?

Yes, every five years. You can renew by taking a half-day test if you have filled your log book with 60 entries in the last five years, 10 of which on the last year prior to renewal, or you must retake the whole training course.
